What the buggering bollocks is all this Nu Rave crap about?
So I was emailing round the crew for topics on which I should be blogging and I was reminded by a friend of mine of one of my regular rants...Nu Rave.
Yes that old bugger. I know this could be seen as yesterdays chip paper but it still fucking galls me.
At Glastonbury I was forced to confront the same old shit but in a different county. Snotty middle class Skins wannabees dancing round with their shit raybans and glowsticks. Now don't get me wrong the bands bandying around this term are fucking good...Klaxons, New Yong Pony Club, CSS, ShitDisco love it but is it Nu Rave?
So what the fuck is Nu Rave anyway? From what I can see its simply indie dancefloor fillers and bears sod all relevance to the initial rave movement. Yep that old chestnut. So essentially its something other indie bands like Franz Ferdinand and Artic Monkeys et al been doing for a while. Im being serious here, listen to the Klaxons then stick on some of the old skool rave stuff...Im thinking A Guy Called Gerald and S Express - where the buggering hell is the similiarity?
The best bit is check out urban dictionary definition Nu Rave -
Nu Rave is when rich young children 'rave' in a licensed venue, listening to average indie pop bands who call themselves Nu Rave to get the rich young kids to buy their records and make them and their record companies/the venues money.
"Hey Ollie are you coming to Koko Nu Rave night tonight, it'll be jolly good fun. We can buy GLOWSTICKS and wear colourful trousers and act all kerayzeeeeeee, then we can come back to mine and get Jeeves to russle us up a couple of VODKA AND TONICS!..... man"
Nail. Head. Hit.
As for the suppossed movement in fashion - glow sticks, well, when you look back at pictures of raves during the late 80s and early 90s they don't look cool, do they? We don't all wanna look like Tracey from Big Brother do we? Glowsticks weren't cool then and they certainly aren't cool now. How can anyone who is bolloxed, waving a glowstick look cool?
Anyways this scene was created by that starter of all things supa cool* the NME.
If you really wanna hear what people were digging back then go buy 100% old Skool and be done with it.

well put! i just think im getting older and i dont understand cool anymore... but i hate 'crazy' 18 year olds with a passion..
nu-rave, nu-punk, nu-metal?!!?
no nu-ideas?
here's one for you - nu-twats!!!
i'm off to buy a sharp knife.
Fucking genius!
Nu-rave??? How can that music be called nu rave?? It's just some fuckin ridiculous marketing gimmick to make the music seem more underground and 'trendy' than it really is?
Proper rave music is acid house, happy hardcore and old school jungle - but most of the bands making new rave probably would'nt have a clue about that music which is the funny thing
Mind you The Klaxons are a great band but if you put them in the Hacienda back when it first started they'd probably get mugged and go home crying to mummy and daddy
Jez
Its just old shit recycled with a name that is designed to be "zany" and confusing, designed to attract attention by triggering fond memories to those of us less fortunate to be old enough to remember real rave back in the day.
Nu Rave - Funk U (see what I did there).
Hmmm, it seems that genre definitions have always been confusing;-
RnB - What does that have to do with Rhythm and Blues!?!
Hardcore - what? techno? punk? metal? P0RN? builders rubble?
Geez!
i agree - but i think its with loadsa other styles too, like all this disco punk stuff
everyones just regurgitating the same old rubbish & all the labels are flocking to them
anyway thats my opinion - same with this this rave rock stuff
but what do i know
Thanks guys....nice to know I touched so many of you;)
I do remember listening to a Klaxons interview on xfm and they actually sated they were new wave, jokingly and thats the first time i heard it. I thought it was funny at the time taking a stint fro new-wave. I did realise it actually adopted the sad day-glo colours and all that, they wernt cool in the first place.
Even though im an indie kid, I used to love the old rave, 'What time is love' and 808 state could blow all this nu-rave crap out the water.
Nu rave eh??......sounds like the twats from NME trying to label stuff again, just so they can be quoted by WIKIPEDIA or some other try hard publication desperatley trying to cling to cool...The Nu rave term was being banded around even when i was working for HMV and that was well over a year and a half ago. Hot chip were about to break and the shop was full of try harder 18 year olds in "skinny fit jean and dressed in pink".......(Hadouken quote, clever right??!!)........To me Nu rave is simple.....a band that uses an electronic sound and fuses it with their music, shove your glow sticks in your mums arse!!!!!
hmm interesting...
the outfits remind me of how some ppl
in harajuku dress tho...like 'decora girls'
so then ill just love it for that
and nothing else
