Today...Brazilian Girls***

Today I am mostly loving Brazilian Girls who aren’t Brazilian and only one of them is a girl. Fronted by the charismatic Sabina Sciubba – Latino affected art rap, pop, nonsense they are the freshest thing I’ve heard since my little obsession with Miss Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes).

They call themselves ‘melting pop’ and they aren’t wrong – fusing so many styles from samba to lounge to psych all smeared in the slick oiliness of a risqué jazz club circa 1962. Sciubba is the quintessential muse – all smokey voiced and jauntily posed.

They are enjoying success stateside after appearing on the David Letterman Show (no, I don’t know how a band with lyrics like “Pussy, pussy, marijuana” got on there either) and they met whilst jamming at New York Club Nublu. Sciubba has a very romantic view of how she met the rest of the band “Love at first sight and it moved as fast as the Autobahn” (don’t you just love people who talk like that?).

They aren’t just electro perverts though, the song “Me Gustas Cuando Callas” – “I like it When You Shut the Fuck Up” is based on a poem by Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda.

I heard their debut UK release the other day on XFM. It’s called “Talk to La Bomb” and actually had me and my mate hang back from our bop to the pub to make sure we got the name of the band. They are everywhere just open your eyes –“Jique” is being used in the new Blackberry advert where they are remixed by Mstkrft and “Lazy Lover” was used in a body wash commercial.

Big things on the horizon methinks…

Hi Victoria,

Glad to finally hear that someone with influence has reviewed "liquid limousine" Great band. Time is right to get back to mid 90 Rock & Roll. The guy's seem like they know what they are doing and what they want.Fuck the pretence of being on stage to be a "Rock and Roll star" and get down to proper music for proper people. When they played Camden they were "blinding", pure Rock & Roll without the "bollocks". I'd put money on them being band of 2008.

Yours Steve
